Beijing Churches Cancel On-site Sunday Services after New COVID-19 Cases Appeared

Affected by the pandemic, churches in Chongwenmen and Zhushikou, which were scheduled to resume Sunday services on June 14, will continue to be suspended.

In the early hours of June 12-13, emergency notices were issued stating that due to changes in the pandemic situation in Beijing, government authorities suspended Sunday services. Worship services would need to continue through the Internet.

On June 11, a new COVID-19 case was confirmed in Xicheng District, Beijing. On June 12, two additional cases were reported in Fengtai District, Beijing, all employees of the same work unit. On the same day and because of the new outbreak, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission released a message that primary and secondary schools would not return to school on June 15.

On June 9, the Beijing Christian Council issued an announcement that beginning on June 10 each church could be reopened after passing the evaluation of the relevant district department. Previously, the Beijing Christian Council organized pastoral staff and some commissioned volunteers to carry out nucleic acid detection work, laying a foundation for the orderly restoration of religious activities in various churches.

After the initial announcement, churches in  Chongwenmen, Zhushikou and others were scheduled to resume Sunday worship on June 14, after putting in place a registration system and arranging for multiple services on Sunday.
