Shanghai Churches Suspend Public Services Due to COVID-19 Crisis

Many churches in Shanghai issued emergency notices suspending gatherings as six local COVID-19 cases were reported in Huangpu District on Thursday.  

The closed churches included Moore Memorial Church, All Saints Church, Pure Heart Church, Huizhong Church in Huangpu District, Fitch Memorial Church, Gospel Church in Pudong New Area, and Grace Church, New Grace Church in Jing'an District. Others like Xinjing Church, Huxi Church in Changning District, Transfiguration Church in Qingpu District, and Beiqiao Jesus Church in Minhang District were also shut down.

While the on-site gatherings were suspended in accordance with government health department requirements, Grace Baptist Church and Grace of China Church stated that they would hold online Sunday worship services and place their messages on their WeChat official accounts. They urged the believers to pray for the pandemic, listen to the online sermons at home on time with reverence and protect themselves against the virus.

In the Huangpu District of Shanghai, the Zhaotong Road residential area on the south side of Fuzhou Road was declared a medium-risk area. Local churches reminded the congregation members to avoid nonessential travel and protect themselves if they went out.

Shanghai found six local confirmed COVID-19 cases which were all in Huangpu district on January 21. At present, 74 close contacts in this city had been traced and placed under quarantine for medical observation, according to a report from the Shanghai Municipal Construction Committee on Friday.
