Recently, a Shanghai church released a notice stating that it would remain closed due to a renovation which started in March.

On March 18, Shanghai Community Church announced, "Thank God for the reopening of churches due to de-escalation of the COVID-19 pandemic, as Shanghai Municipal CC&TSPM has informed district CC&TSPMs to resume in-person services while abiding by relevant regulations."

The church has been closed down since the end of January 2020.

The church continued, “With help and care from all parties, the repair work of Shanghai Community Church is initially scheduled to start in March, which means the construction units may carry out renovation in the church. During this period, it remains closed to the public. Please accept our apologies for the inconvenience, and pray for us to have the strength and confidence needed to move forward.”

Established by Americans living in China in 1920, the original Community Church met in a small house. Five years later, a new larger interdenominational church was built. Boasting the largest foreign attendance, the church has received many prestigious foreign figures, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey, and Nobel laureate Rev. Desmond Tutu.
