Chongyi Church, located in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, traces its roots back to November 1866, when Hudson Taylor, founder of the China Inland Mission, established the mission's first settlement in the city. Due to a growing Christian population, land was acquired on Qingtai Street in 1901, and the original Chongyi Church building was completed in 1902.
Reopened in 1945 following wartime closures, Chongyi Church continued to serve the local Christian community. In response to the rapid growth of Christianity in Hangzhou, the municipal government approved the church's relocation and reconstruction in October 2000. The new church building, completed on May 5, 2005, covers a total floor area of 12,480 square meters, with the main sanctuary occupying 3,750 square meters, standing as one of the largest churches in Hangzhou and the first megachurch in China. The new sanctuary can seat 5,500 worshippers, and its 42 million yuan construction cost was entirely funded by believers.
This centennial church has welcomed renowned international evangelists such as Franklin Graham, who preached to 12,000 people in May 2008, and Luis Palau, who spoke to a crowd of approximately 14,000 in March 2010.
