In 1862, Griffith John, a British missionary from the London Missionary Society, came to Xiaogan, Hubei, to preach the Gospel. He established a church and later on, several British missionaries arrived at the city to evangelize one after another.

The church Griffith founded was renamed "Xiaogan Chinese Church" in 1911 and it is located in 2 Guandadongmennei Dajie. Before the founding of New China, the church had about ten Chinese preachers, which includes Chen Chongmei, Xiong Shangda and Chen Yashi. After 1949, Rev. Han Zhongping was assigned by the church of Hubei to serve in the church, pastoring a congregation of more than 200 people.

After the opening up and reform (in 1970), some of the believers gathered in another district and moved to several places from 1999 to 2013. During that period, four pastors were sent by Hubei CCC&TSPM to nurture local believers, including Rev. Huang Wu, who proposed to build a new church that would be the first church in the city since the 19th century.

Supported by the donations from believers, the new church construction started in 2014 and was completed after two years with the help of the local government. On May 8, 2016, the congregation moved to gather in the new church with a construction area of 4700 m2 or 1.161 acres.
