More than 100,000 tickets in less than five hours were sold on the final major batch of ticket sale for Rio Olympic Games, an organizer said on Thursday.

According to Rio2016.com, tickets that were most favored by fans were football, beach volleyball, basketball, tennis and athletics.

However, tickets for the men's 100m final, beach volleyball, marathon and football were still on sale, said Rio 2016 ticketing director Donavan Ferreti.

"We are very pleased with the rush for Olympic tickets experienced today," said Ferreti.

"We know that Brazilians are last-minute buyers and it is fantastic to see that the excitement and anticipation for the Games is now reaching its peak."

On Monday, organizers for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games announced that they were on sale at local shops for the first time.

Tickets were previously available for Brazilian residents online but were now on sale at two shopping mall outlets in Rio.

Ferreti in a statement emphasized that the price on the website is exactly the same as in the ticket office and people do not need to wait to come to the ticket office to purchase their ticket."

The Olympic Games will be held at Rio de Janeiro on August 2 to 21, 2016.
